Scagglethorpe Manor, Scagglethorpe, Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 8DT

Scagglethorpe Manor is a fine village house with a varied history.  It is mainly early 17th century and was, until 1994 the farmhouse of Scagglethorpe Manor Farm, then owned by the Birdsall Estate.  The house was considerably extended in the late 18th century and early 19th century, culminating in the completion of a period music room (known locally as the ballroom) in 1823; this is now a fine formal drawing room.  A range of small rooms was added at the rear of the property, originally game larders, and a cellar was excavated under the garden.  At around the same time it is likely that the kitchen was developed from a byre or barn.  It is thought that these and other improvements were made to entertain guests who came to buy the Cleveland Bay horses which were bred at Scagglethorpe at this time.  These horses were almost certainly the source of wealth which allowed the owners to extend the property since, during the Napoleonic wars, demand for heavy horses soared, as did their value.  The house has a brief mention in Pesvners “The buildings of England” and is listed grade II.

The entrance to Scagglethorpe Manor is via double timber gates set in a brick wall which lead through to a grassy gravelled parking area in front of the barn.  This detached building provides garaging for several vehicles, a large workshop, haystore and further storage area.  There is an upper storey approached by an internal stairway, emphasising the potential of the building for conversion to any number of uses subject to appropriate planning consents.

Beyond the conservatory entrance there is a 2 storey extension which comprises the former wash house, curing cellar and stables and this has current planning permission for conversion to a 2 bedroom cottage if required.

Tall Scots pines and beech trees stand sentinel close to the entrance gates and the grounds are indeed generally well timbered, with a fire horse chestnut, three more magnificent beech trees and a further stand of Scots pines in the north east.  There is a large orchard with mature fruit trees, a dense shrubbery behind the house with a variegated holly, a brick built summer house, with larches and an ornamental cherry nearby.  There is a small duck pond,  and to the east of the garden there are two fenced paddocks each with a field shelter, and a vegetable garden with raised beds.  In all some 3.7 acres.

The village of Scagglethorpe lies just to the east of Malton, on the marches of the great Estates of Birdsall and Settrington, and almost at the junction of the Yorkshire Wolds and the Howardian Hills, with Ryedale stretching away to the north.  The surrounding countryside is rural and undulating and access is easy to Malton where there is an excellent range of local facilities as well as a rail connection to York, from where Kings Cross can be reached in 1 ¾ hours.   The property has been beautifully looked after and improved by the present owners, and its garden and land provide an ideal setting, with planning possibilities in the cottage and barn.  The house has interesting period features including fireplaces, beamed ceilings and working shutters and is presented ready for immediate occupation.
