Number 3 Fishergate House is a superb ground floor flat occupying a large proportion of the detached, grade II listed Fishergate House. Fishergate House was designed by the well known York architect, Atkinson, and built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria was crowned, for Thomas Laycock and his family. This rather grand property is of particular architectural importance and has a long and interesting history. It was sold in 1931 to the War Department who left their mark in the form of a war bunker. It was also used by the Ordnance Survey as offices, and in recent years was the headquarters of Shepherd Homes. When Shepherd Homes moved to larger premises in Fulford in the early 2000s, they converted the house and grounds to its current layout of spectacular flats.
Fishergate House is located on the site of the former medieval Priory of St Andrews, just outside the city walls in an area between Fulford and the city centre. Its location above the eastern banks of the river Ouse provides easy access to Minster Way, a glorious and popular riverside walk that links the historic heart of York to Beverley Minster, via the Yorkshire Wolds.
York is dominated by the superb Minster which stands sentinel over the medieval streets of the city centre. Excellent road and rail communications (London King’s Cross 1 ¾ hours at best) a good range of state and private schools, varied shopping and other facilities have made the city of York, as befits its historic status, probably England’s second city. 3, Fishergate House is ideally situated to enjoy this vibrant city’s shops, cafes, bars and restaurants together with numerous leisure and cultural venues.
