The Little Portion, Wrench Green, Hackness, Nr Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO13 9AB
Believed to date from around the 1750s, the Little Portion is a charming, stone-built, period cottage set in an idyllic location in the Derwent Valley, on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. It enjoys an elevated position looking south towards the Forge Valley, a local beauty spot that is famed for its spectacular mixed deciduous woodland and excellent angling on the Derwent.
The cottage, which is south facing and set back from the road, has undergone a comprehensive programme of refurbishment over recent years and the result is an utterly charming and very comfortable property bursting with character.
- The centrepiece of the house is the dining room with its exposed timber beams, wide flagstones, window seat and fireplace with stone surround. The oak panelling was handcrafted by Malcolm "Foxman" Pipes, an apprentice and ‘right hand man’ of Robert "Mouseman" Thompson's.
- The farmhouse kitchen features exposed ceiling beams, an oil fired cream Aga and double butler sink.
- The lovely cottage garden (approximately 1/3 acre) with its spring fed pond sits comfortably within the dramatic countryside that surrounds it. An hexagonal timber summerhouse with slate and lead roof is positioned to enjoy wide reaching views over open countryside, and a detached stone garage with workshop abuts the country road.
- Panoramic views within the valley can be enjoyed from most of the rooms in the house.
- Seamer Railway Station, just 5 miles away from Wrench Green, lies at the end of a branch of the North TransPennine route. There is a direct link to York Railway Station with a connection to London Kings Cross (2½ hours at best).
